Our
division represents a broad range of social work professionals
in a geographic region that borders New York City. We have
urban, suburban and rural communities with varying needs and services.
We loosely divide ourselves into southern and northern
Westchester although our membership cuts across all areas.
Our population of over 920,000 is spread out over four moderately
sized cities and over 50 towns and villages.
We
have 3 major universities in the county, as well as 10 colleges,
including S.U.N.Y. Purchase College and Westchester Community
College. We have 5 B.S.W. and Human Services programs as
well as 2 M.S.W. programs in the county. We have over 2000
N.A.S.W. and other non-affiliated social work professionals in
the county. We attend a variety of training institutes both
in Westchester and New York City.
Westchester,
while portrayed as an affluent county, is home to a very heterogeneous,
socio-economic and ethnically diverse population. There
is a wide network of public and private agencies and organizations
that work together to provide services. The County meets
the needs of an increasing number of immigrant families, providing
services in a number of different languages and outreach locations.
Our division often meets at New
York Presbyterian Hospital in White Plains and many of our workshops
and conferences are held there, as well as other agency sites
and college locations (see Calendar of Events)
Our committees provide ongoing enrichment and educational experiences
for both members and non-members. Our professionals are
well represented and highly regarded in all ranks of government
in Westchester County.
