PRIVATE PRACTICE GROUP FORMING IN SUFFOLK
As social workers we are familiar with the clinical skills necessary to be successful in a private practice, but how many of us are equally skilled at the business end of a private practice?
How much do you know about the Red Flag Rules that social workers will have to apply to their practice in November? Does becoming a LLC provide better legal protection against lawsuits? Are you getting all the tax deductions that the law allows? How successful are you at practice building? Do you feel somewhat isolated as a private practitioner? Would you like more of an opportunity to network with other social workers or get feedback on challenging clients?
These and many other important topics will be discussed at the newly formed Private Practice Group which is part of the Suffolk Division of NASW.
Please join us for our first meeting to learn about these topics and more!

Social Work Day 2009 at the United Nations

------------------------------------------------------
Dear Suffolk NASW-NYS Member,
In response to the recent murder of Ecuadorian immigrant Marcelo Lucero in Patchogue, NY, I have submitted a letter to the editor to Newsday on behalf of the NASW-NYS Suffolk Division to express our concern and call for legislative action. In addition on December 2nd the letter was read to the Suffolk County Legislature, and a copy was provided to each legislator. As a result of the public comments from us and other community advocates Legislator Gregory has introduced a resolution on establishing a Task Force on Hate Crimes in Suffolk County. Assemblyman Ramos and Congressman Israel are also holding a forum to discuss new efforts to prevent and prosecute hate crimes in which I will be participating.
Please know that the Suffolk Division and NASW-NYS Chapter are committed to seeking immigration policies that protect human rights, promote equity and social justice, and discourage racial discrimination or profiling.

Abraham Valentín, Jr., LCSW-R
