The
National Association of Social Workers NYS-Suffolk Division
is one of ten divisions of the New York State Chapter of NASW.
Suffolk County comprises of 1000 square miles of the eastern
two-thirds of Long Island, which extends 120 miles into the
Atlantic Ocean, East from New York City.
With
more than 2,200 NASW members in Suffolk County we continue
to deliver an unprecedented level of services specifically
designed to meet the need of those in need. Members practice
in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools, mental
health clinics, substance abuse clinics, homeless shelters,
child welfare services, family service agencies, nursing homes,
domestic violence shelters, private practice and a variety
of other public and private agencies. Many are clinical social
workers providing therapy.
Members
are trained professionals who have bachelor’s, master’s, or
doctoral degrees in social work. Adelphi University and SUNY
Stony Brook are two of the universities providing undergraduate
and graduate courses in social work.
This
division is very active in serving as a means of communication,
networking, advocating, mentoring and providing quality training
and development. We have an elected Steering Committee and
several Committees including Mental Health, Aging, HIV/AIDS
and Hispanic Affairs
Members
are kept informed through our website and quarterly newsletter
which is published in February, May, August and November.
Our Annual Awards dinner, held in October of each year, recognizes
social workers, community leaders, social work students and
agencies for their contribution to the field of social work
and to the community.
