JohnA Message from John Allegretti-Freeman, LCSW=R
Northeast Division Director

Congratulations to those of you who are completing your degree and entering the profession of Social Work.  NASW can be a wonderful way for you to stay connected to the variety of professional issues that we face in the field.  This becomes more important after you leave the university setting.   Job demands, and life in general, frequently lead us to focus on the narrow area of social work we are engaged in.  NASW can assist in broadening that area of interest and perhaps opening pathways for  future directions you may take as a social worker.  NASW can also help you to stay aware of the many changes taking place in the field.  You can network with social workers from a variety of social work fields, increasing your visibility and presence in the field.

So, as you celebrate your graduation, consider celebrating your entry into the professional world by joining us.  As Division Director for the Northeast Region, I am always looking for dedicated individuals to help to shape the training opportunities and advocacy issues we deal with locally.

If you are still a student, please consider joining us so that you can have a voice in your local division.  Student input and assistance in planning meaningful events and training is most welcomed.  For you, it gives you an opportunity to participate and develop skills for your resume and future work experiences.  You can network with those in the field which can only be a positive all the way around.

Students in the past have helped to organize and present at specific events that they felt were meaningful, actively participated in our monthly meetings, conducted surveys of students, and assisted at our annual conference. You can participate in a variety of ways as we are open to your input.

I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you personally.  The dates of our monthly meetings are posted here.  Please contact me with any questions at northeast@naswnys.org.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has” – Margaret Mead

This quote has attracted me for years and has a prominent place on my desk.  As social workers, we are in a key role to create the type of community we need in order to see real change in the world and to assist in the changes those we serve wish to see in their lives. It is through developing our own skills and supports that we will be able to successfully have an impact on individual and community outcomes.

The Northeast Division of NYS NASW has identified developing social work skills and supports as central to its mission.  We are interested in knowing what you would like to see in terms of in-service skill building programs and support opportunities over the next year in order to more specifically address the needs of social workers in our area.  It is only through your input, involvement, and participation that we can be a vibrant, living community of social workers in Northeast NY!

Please take a moment to e-mail me at northeast@naswnys.org your suggestions, comments, and interests.  I truly look forward to hearing from you.
