Author Guidelines

Deadlines: 2011-12 UPDATE Newsletter Production Schedule

The New York State Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW-NYS) is committed to providing quality products to members to enhance knowledge, skills, and service delivery. NASW-NYS publishes seven newsletters annually with a readership of more than 12,000 social work professionals.

In order to provide our members with pertinent and practical resources and information, the chapter seeks social work practitioners, members of academia, program administrators, and others to submit newsletter articles that are relevant to social work practice in any of our practice areas. The following are guidelines for authors submitting articles for the NASW-NYS Update newsletter.

Length of Article

Three (3) single-spaced pages (approximately 1200 words).

Author Blurb

A brief author blurb must accompany the article and include: the author's full name, degree(s) and any licenses or certifications, job title, employing organization, and an e-mail address for the primary author. Do not use periods between the letters in credentials. Do not place a period after an e-mail address or URL.

Examples:

Christina E. Newhill, PhD, LCSW, BCD, is an associate professor at the School of Social Work, University of Pittsburgh. She can be reached at newhill@pitt.edu

Marilyn K. Rosenson, MSW , is a clinical instructor, Department of Psychiatry, Louisiana State University Medical Center , in New Orleans . An earlier version of this article was presented at NASW's Annual Conference, October 2003, San Francisco. She may be contacted at mrosenson@lsu.edu

Submission

All articles must be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word or rich text format (.rtf). For more information please e-mail celisia_street@naswnys.org.

Distribution

Since the NASW-NYS Chapter Newsletter is a membership benefit, distribution is limited to chapter members and paid subscribers. Complimentary copies are sent to New York State Schools of Social Work as well as all other NASW chapters. The newsletters are also posted on the chapter's members-only website.

Complimentary copies are also provided to all contributing authors. Please include your mailing address with your submission (for internal use only).

Selection

Decisions to include articles in the newsletter are at the discretion of the NASW-NYS staff with final approval from the executive director. Common reasons why articles are not selected include:

  • The article would require significant editing and/or rewriting.

  • The article is not relevant to the section or social work practice, or is in conflict with NASW policy.

  • The article is not consistent with the goal of providing current, practice-oriented information.

Book Reviews

Book reviews must contain the following information: name of book; editor or author of book; full name of publishing company; year, city, and state of publication [ex: 2002, New York, NY]; and whether it's hardcover or softcover, with the number of pages [ex: Hardcover, 258 pages].

Letters to the Editor

Letters should be no longer than 150 words and should reference an item published in the previous edition of Update. Submissions should include the author's name, address, and phone number (contact information is for verification purposes only). Letters should be e-mailed to: celisia_street@naswnys.org or faxed to 518-463-6446. You will be notified within 15 days if your letter will be published.

Publication Rights

The NASW-NYS newsletter is copyrighted; Update newsletter content may not be used or reproduced without the written consent of the NASW-NYS Chapter. Requests for permission to use or reproduce chapter newsletter content must be submitted in writing to Celisia Street, Managing Newsletter Editor, at celisia_street@naswnys.org and include the article title, the newsletter edition and intended use of the content/article.

If the article has been previously published, prior publication information must be included with your submission, as well as a statement that permission has been granted to NASW-NYS to reprint the article. Articles cannot be submitted for publication in the NASW-NYS newsletter as well as an NASW journal or Specialty Practice Section publication.

Editing

Authors are expected to submit articles in print-ready format. Run a spelling and grammar check. The NASW editor will edit all selected articles, but extensive rewrites or significant grammar, spelling, or references errors may result in rejection of an article for publication.

All chapter newsletter articles are subject to review and editing by NASW-NYS. Edited versions of the articles will be provided to authors. Authors are responsible for making appropriate revisions and corrections, within four business days. The editorial work may also include last-minute deletions to meet space and format requirements.

Update Newsletter Article References

Be sure to include professional references that are current and timely. Any reference to earlier research, conceptual work, and so forth should be accompanied by a reference citation in text and complete reference information in the reference list.

All references must be in APA style, as set forth in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition). References are listed in alphabetical order (by surname of first author), then chronologically (earliest publication date first). Be sure that in-text citations are included in the reference list.

If appropriate, consider including a Resource List for readers who may want to further research and explore the topic. Resource lists should also be in APA reference list format.
